Jungle Trekking...
On our last day in KL, I got Erik up early and we headed outside of the city to a forestry reserve, where we hiked for a couple of hours in the jungle...poor Erik--he was sick as a dog with some stomach thing (probably from all the stinky fruit!) and he indulged me in this hike! I really wanted to do it because of this canopy bridge that was 100 feet off the ground...after we started walking on it, I wondered why I wanted to do this, since it was VERY shaky, and very HIGH off the ground...i just tried not to look down!
the last stop on our tour was some random animal park, called "Deerland"
it was a strange place with a few different kind of animals around and we were able to feed them, and in some cases hold them---that strange thing i am holding is some kind of bat, or "glider" as the kid kept telling me...i was just standing there looking and this kid just opened my hand and put this creature in my palm! EWWWW...it was trembling and scared and I felt sorry for it! Apparently its nocturnal so I think it was really just ready to fall asleep...either way, strange...at one point the same kid asked, as we were standing in front of the pen of the bear cub, if i wanted to go inside and pet it...at that point, we knew it was time to go!
Smelly Fruit!
On our tour, our guide stopped at this fruit stand on the side of the road when we told him we hadn't tried this fruit yet...apparently it is THE fruit of Malaysia...its called Durian fruit and the first time I saw mention of it, was when we checked into our hotel, there was a note in the notel services book that said, absolutely NO durian fruits allowed in the hotel....I wondered why and then I realized when I stepped out of the car--it STINKS! It is just a terribly rancid smell that sticks around and would probably send all hotel guests running, if it was brought into the grounds...Erik was very gracious and kept eating this fruit that our guide kept splitting open for us to try, I politely had a SMALL bite and then moved away... GROSS!
Sky Bar...
we liked this place SO much, we went back TWICE...it was this swanky bar/.lounge at hte top of this equally swanky hotel that had incredible views of the Petronas Towers at night...this place also had really good drinks and we found out later, from a big sign in the lobby, that the bar was featuring a "mixologist" for the month of August from Sweden or someplace, and apparently he was "world-renowned" for his drink mixing abilities! It was hilarious! Like something out of a SNL skit! He played the part too, looked like some swedish model, tall, blond, hair in a small pontail, dressed all in white, with a brooding look...we didn't see him do a lot of mixing, just standing there, looking bored! I just couldn't believe there was actually a poster advertising for this guy!
KL Tower...
We went to dinner here at the top of this "space needle"-like tower in a "revolving" restaurant...the food was OK but the view was fantastic! We realized that the people of Malaysia really like the buffet style of restaurant...some of the food was a little suspect...but we enjoyed ourselves anyways!
Batu Caves...
I know this is sideways--sorry...again, another issue with the ancient computer here!
This massive staute was at the base of 300 steps up to huge caves that are actually Hindu temples...the crazy thing about these stairs, aside from the fact that they are poorly made and you feel like you could fall off at any moment, is that all around you as you are climbing up are monkeys! Just like you would see a squirrel here, they got monkeys, except they are far more tame and unafraid of people...one girl, a pilot from the ship, we heard later was bitten by a big monkey as she tried to feed another monkey a banana! I was freaked out while I was climbing these stairs!
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia!!!
Wow, long time and NO post from this girl--SORRY!
Quick update: Sophie, Lucy and I are here on the East coast with my parents while Erik is still on deployment...we have been here since the end of June and have been enjoying EVERY minute...SOOOOOOOO much has been going on--weddings, babies, trips, more babies, and more weddings!! Its been WONDERFUL to be here with my family close by, it really has helped make the time that Erik is away go by fast and I can't believe its already been three months!
Sorry again, for the lack of blogs...the computer here at my parents is from the year 2, so internet-ing is difficult...I DID manage to get this OLD computer hooked up to some high speed, but loading and uploading pictures and graphics is quite difficult!!
The highlight so far of being on the East coast, was being able to go and visit Erik at exactly the half-way point of his cruise and having my very generous parents watch my girls for a week while I traveled halfway around the world to go see Erik...it was amazing to see him and we were able to have FIVE whole days together!!!
Here are some pics from our trip...enjoy!
By the way, these are the Petronas towers (you may remember them from that movie, Entrapment, with Catherine Zeta-Jone and Sean Connery???)
